Ranks of the Elite - Volume Two continues Imam Ibn al-Jawzi's abridgement of Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani's Hilyat al-Awliya (published under the title Sifat al-Safwah), an encyclopaedic collection of biographies of pious early Muslims. This second volume opens with the wives of the Prophet Muhammad and prominent female Companions before moving on to notable men and women from Madinah, Makkah, Yemen, the Hijaz, Damascus, and Baghdad across subsequent generations, covering over 250 figures in total. Each entry highlights the individual's knowledge, piety, courage, and scholarship, often illustrated through their own sayings and reported incidents. It is intended for readers of Islamic history and biography wanting detailed accounts of the lives of the early pious generations, and is sold as a standalone volume separate from Volume One.
