Where it comes from
Umar (RA) acquired some land in Khaybar, and he came to the Prophet ﷺ seeking advice about it. He said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have acquired land in Khaybar, and I have never acquired wealth more valuable to me than it. What do you command me concerning it?”
The Prophet ﷺ said: “If you wish, keep the property itself and give its produce in charity.”
So Umar (RA) made it an endowment: it was not to be sold, given away, or inherited. Its fruits were to be given to the poor, relatives, slaves, travellers and guests.
This hadith in Bukhari and Muslim is considered the foundational textual basis for the institution of waqf. It inspired Muslimsk Studentsamfunn to build lasting charity projects that will benefit people over a long time. MSS Waqf is an addition to our regular one-time collections.
Existing projects

Every year, MSS sponsors and supports 10 orphaned children in Gaza, helping to cover their essential needs and provide stability for their future. Through our partnership with Islamic Relief Norge, we are committed to supporting these children until they reach the age of 18, ensuring they receive ongoing care, assistance, and opportunities to thrive despite challenging circumstances.

Water well — Kenya
The Automatic Water Well Project in Kilifi County, Kenya, is the inaugural MSS Waqf initiative. Equipped with an automated pump system, the well provides a reliable source of clean water to a local community, improving access to safe water and supporting daily life. This sustainable project will in shaa Allah continue to benefit families year after year, embodying the lasting impact of sadaqah jariyah.
The MSS Waqf initiative is only just beginning, but our vision extends far beyond the projects we support today. We hope to build a lasting legacy that continues to benefit communities for generations to come. Through the support of our members and donors, we aim to grow the Waqf fund and undertake increasingly impactful projects in the years ahead. Whether it is additional water wells, educational initiatives, healthcare projects, or even the construction of an orphanage in the future, our goal is to create sustainable sources of benefit that continue long after we are gone.
Not a campaign — nothing to give to yet
From decision to done
When the MSS Board chooses a new Waqf project, we announce it on our social media channels and begin fundraising. Throughout the campaign, we provide regular updates as key milestones are reached so that our community can follow the project’s progress.
Once the fundraising goal has been achieved, MSS partners with a trusted organization on the ground to carry out the project. We work with the partners to ensure the project is delivered as intended and benefits the target community.
During and after construction, our partners provide photos and updates which are shared on our social media platforms. This allows donors and supporters to see the direct impact of their contributions and follow the project’s completion from start to finish.

One at a time
As a student-led community initiative, MSS currently focuses on one Waqf project at a time, in addition to our sponsorship programme. This approach lets us keep it transparent, deliver it properly, and build a legacy that lasts.
