Muslimsk Studentsamfunn has been the Muslim student society at the University of Oslo since 20 March 1995. Today it is the largest in Scandinavia.
What MSS does
We give Muslim students at UiO somewhere to pray, learn and meet.
MSS is a registered student society, run by a board of students the members elect every September. Membership is 100 kr a year and open to every Muslim student.

Jumu'ah and the Mosalla
The Friday prayer every week in Frederikke Gymsal. The Mosalla is the prayer room we look after, and we print its prayer timetable every month.
Lectures and halaqah
Talks by invited speakers, and a weekly Quran halaqa for sisters.
Al-Maktabah
Our free lending library of Islamic books, opened in 2026.
The Scandinavian Quran Competition
A Quran recitation competition in Oslo once a year, for brothers and sisters from across Scandinavia.
Iftars and socials
Shared iftars in Ramadan, football, padel, cabin trips and game nights.
Charity
Fundraising campaigns, sadaqah projects and MSS Waqf. Our stands in 2023–24 raised 116,055 kr for Palestine.
Our story
From a few,
to a community.
MSS was started in 1995 by a small group of Muslim students who wanted somewhere to pray and meet on campus. What began as a few gatherings is now a society of hundreds.
Today we run our own library and the Scandinavian Quran Competition, and we keep in touch with the students who came before us.

MSS founded
On 20 March 1995, a handful of Muslim students at UiO start the society.
Salam in print
MSS starts Salam, its own student magazine about faith, ideas and campus life.
Held together through the pandemic
With the campus closed, iftars, lectures and halaqas move online. The Ramadan series runs together with OsloMet's Muslim society.
Invited by HL-senteret
The Holocaust Center invites MSS into its project on discrimination against Muslims in Norway, part of the Government's 2020–23 action plan. Researcher Cora Alexa Døving gives MSS a tour.
A newsletter every hijri month
On the first of each hijri month a newsletter goes out to every member: society news, Islamic history, a hadith, and a du'a to memorise.
116,055 kr for Palestine
"Stand for Palestina" runs at Frederikkeplassen through the winter of 2023–24, with Innocents Norge. It is the largest sum MSS has raised for one cause.
Society of the Year, runner-up
MSS takes second place for Årets Forening ved UiO, with two board members nominated for Årets Ildsjel the same year.
First Quran Competition
The first Scandinavian Quran Competition is held for the brothers, with reciters from across Scandinavia. Its final is part of the first "Allah Says" conference at Dreams Holmlia. In June, Dr Haifaa Younis gives a talk for sisters at Chateau Neuf.
Open to all, and a library of our own
The Quran Competition opens to sisters as well as brothers. Al-Maktabah, our own library, opens in April. The Gaza orphan campaign raises about 90,000 kr.

New students join every autumn, and every September the members elect a new board.

Every board works for the same thing: bringing Muslim students together through prayer, study, football and iftars.

Rules and reporting
If something at MSS is not right, tell us.
You can report anything that breaks our ethical guidelines, our statutes or the law, by a member or at one of our events. It can be something that happened to you, or something you saw or were told about.
Write to varsel@muslimskstudent.no. Within a week, the people handling it will ask to meet you, and you can bring someone along. We keep every report confidential.
You can report anonymously, though it can leave us too little to act on. If you are unsure, an anonymous report is better than none. For help writing it, ask a friend, SiO Foreninger at varseltilforening@sio.no, or UiO's student ombud.

Membership is open
There is a place for you here.
Join 300+ students for 100 kr a year. Members borrow from the library for free and vote at the general assembly. Most of our events are open to everyone.
