Muslimsk Studentsamfunn has been the Muslim student society at the University of Oslo since 20 March 1995. Today it is the largest in the country.
Our story
From a few,
to a community.
MSS was started in 1995 by a small group of Muslim students who wanted somewhere to pray and meet on campus. What began as a few gatherings is now Norway's largest Muslim student society.
Today we run our own library and the Scandinavian Quran Competition, and we keep in touch with the students who came before us.

MSS founded
On 20 March 1995, a handful of Muslim students at UiO start the society. It grows into the largest Muslim student society in Norway.
Salam in print
MSS launches Salam — the society’s own magazine, a student voice for faith, ideas and campus life.
Held together through the pandemic
Iftars, lectures and halaqas move online, run together with OsloMet's Muslim society, so a year of closed campuses is not a year spent alone.
Research with HL-senteret
A partnership with the Holocaust Center studying discrimination against Muslims in Norway, tied to the Government's 2020–23 action plan.
A newsletter every hijri month
On the first of each hijri month a newsletter goes out to every member: society news, Islamic history, a hadith, and a du'a to memorise.
116,055 kr for Palestine
"Stand for Palestina" runs at Frederikkeplassen through the winter. It is the largest sum the society has raised for a single cause.
Society of the Year, runner-up
MSS takes second place for Årets Forening ved UiO, with two board members nominated for Årets Ildsjel the same year.
First Quran Competition
The first Scandinavian Quran Competition is held for the brothers, with reciters from across Norway. The same year, the first "Allah Says" conference at Chateau Neuf.
Open to all, and a library of our own
The Quran Competition opens to sisters as well as brothers. Al-Maktabah, the society's own library, opens its doors. The annual Gaza orphan campaign raises about 90,000 kr.
Norway's largest, and still growing
MSS remains the country’s largest Muslim student society, welcoming a new intake of students every single year.

Our own library, free to borrow from. Opened in 2026.

Our Quran competition, once a year in Oslo.

The Community Fund and sadaqah projects.
Our compass
وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا
And hold firmly together to the rope of Allah, and do not be divided.
That is our goal, and every board takes it up again: gather the students, and keep them together, through prayer, study, football pitches and shared iftars.
