Trials and Tribulations

Wisdom and Benefits

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah

A believer may face many trials that test faith, patience and endurance, and in a world of conflict, disaster and private difficulty the shaytan uses them to make a person question. Ibn al-Qayyim gives both halves of the answer: that hardship can follow from one's own sin, in leaving something obligatory or committing what is prohibited, and that it is equally a means by which Allah aids and ennobles His servants and grants them well-being. The most severely tried were the Prophets and then those closest to them, and the book dwells on what the Companions endured, driven from their homes and their possessions left behind. Dar as-Sunnah print it with an appendix drawn from the work of al-Imam al-'Izz ibn 'Abd al-Salam. Ninety-six pages.
