Allah says, do not walk upon the earth arrogantly, for you will never tear the earth apart nor reach the mountains in height; and the Prophet said that no one with a mustard seed's weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise. Ibn Abi al-Dunya takes humility as both a sign of true faith and a protection against arrogance, treating it not as a moral preference but as what a believer who knows his position before his Lord actually looks like. The book follows humility through the places it shows: in dealings with others, in speech, in clothing, and in the way a person walks.
